Dreaming of Spring

It’s 25 degrees outside and snowing – again.  I wanted to share with you a picture of some favorite things of mine.  I was able to bring in a parsley plant for the winter from the garden.  It’s doing okay, just needs more sun, as we all do.  I dried some sage, thyme, and roses.  My mom gave me the berry box holding the roses, hydrangeas and thyme.  Some of the doilies were made by my great-grandmother.   Items remaining are the bunnies (which you know I love), egg cups and a piece from my red and white transferware collection.  Sometimes it’s fun to put your favorite things together and take a snapshot.  Photos do tell a story and gives the viewer glimpses into the mind of the photographer.  My mind is thinking SPRING!

Fall or Winter?

The last I looked on the calendar it was still fall.  However, as I walked outside late Sunday afternoon, it was a different story.  The first snowfall of the season is before Thanksgiving.  I was thinking about snow shovels, blower, plow, 4WD, slippery roads, etc.  My son Cody reminded me about the joys of the first snow fall.  He bundled up in his snowsuit,( a bit much for the small amount of snow, but he was excited) and started to play.   He hit me with a snowball and made a snow angel.  I grabbed my camera and had to take the garden shot.  I have to admit, the large snowflakes are beautiful.  There’s something peaceful with the snow.  It seemed that all became quiet and you could almost hear the flakes touching the ground.  I must remind you that this is probably the last time I will feel such joy for the snow this season.  But, it was nice to get lost in the enjoyment of the snowflakes, if even for a few minutes.

Frosty Mornings

October 24, 2008

Frosty mornings are upon us.  We have to click on the heat just to take the chill off, we have to scrape our windshields (for those of us without a garage big enough for all the vehicles), we scramble to find a jacket to let the dogs out and it’s the first sign that winter is creeping up fast.  After you find your jacket, grab a cup of coffee and take a quiet walk outside in the early morning.  Listen to the crunch of the grass as you walk upon it (I wouldn’t advise flip flops at this point), it’s cool.  Watch your breath in the air before you.  Remember how fun that was as a kid?  It’s still fun!  Take a peak in the garden and you will see beauty that can only be seen in the beginning of daylight.  I took this picture this morning.  The coneflower refuses to take a nap yet.  It doesn’t last for long as the sun will melt the frost and before you know it all that remains is the picture of fall clean-up needing to be done.  Enjoy this time for it is only short-lived.  Share your experience with me!

It was a beautiful weekend for this event.  I hope everyone enjoyed the weather.  It appears that this weekend is going to be beautiful as well.  Hope to see you at market!

THE COUNTRY HERITAGE COLOR TOUR is this weekend.  It begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.  This is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with those that provide hand made in Michigan products and locally grown produce.  This is my first time on the tour.  A little nervous and excited at the same time.  I’m already making plans for next year.  You know me, can’t stop throwing myself out there.  I have maps available for the thirteen sights on the tour.  Stop by the farm to pick one up.  It’s a free tour and the weather this weekend will be great for fall touring!  I’ll post photos from the tour next week.

Harvest season has begun and we’ve been picking until our fingers are bleeding…wait, that’s raspberry juice.  Yesterday we picked 52 pints! A new record for one picking session.  Crooked Creek is now offering our raspberries for sale.  Above is the new sign for our truck.  It is also similar to our label that will be placed on our raspberries.  Check out Crooked Creek Dairy.  Not only do they offer our awesomely delicious raspberries, but they also carry several organic items and they like to support local farmers and growers.  Another great item there is organically grown lettuce called Lettuce Alone.  Very good.  I would also like to thank VanHoutte Farms on Romeo Plank Road for supporting the local grower too.  You should check them out too.  We’ve been busy with school starting back up and fall creeping up on us – quickly!  I finally had time to move the bunnies around.  Had to move them to new headquarters so they can all run and play at the same time, just not together.  Mom’s have become quite territorial.  ANNOUNCEMENT:  The Almont Farmers Market will be  having their Animal Day on Saturday, September 13 from 9am-2pm.  There will be pigs, chicks, a milking goat, maybe a calf and of course, my bunnies.  Come visit us if you can.  I know summer is coming to an end, and as sad as it is to see it go, I welcome fall.  I love all the colors, cooler temperatures and that getting ready for winter energy.  Take time to enjoy the season.  Check out the garden in the early morning.  The dew settles on spider webs and it looks so cool.  I’ll take some early morn pics and post them.  Well, I’ll rest up this evening for a productive day of picking tomorrow :)

Here they come

The raspberries are coming in a little early. There will be plenty this year as long as we don’t get an early freeze. The bees were busy humming and the mosquitos were busy biting. Came out of the field with six pints and seven bites. I didn’t really notice at first because I was too busy thinking about going to market. I was so busy thinking, maybe you could hear me buzzing :)

Just the beginning

August 23, 2008

Vintage Acres is now a reality and we are cruising in a 1928 Chevy Capital 1Ton Stake. This is the official Vintage Acres truck. You’ll be seeing it around town and at Market. The truck spent 20+ years in storage at my father’s place. We obtained it from him and 2.5 years later – VOILA – complete restoration done. It’s been a big year in making our vision a reality. We registered the name, networked, completed the truck, the raspberry bushes are loaded and the signs are being made. It’s very exciting and I have friends and family to thank for their support and encouraging words. We hope to make Vintage Acres, LLC, a place the family can visit seeing some old-time practices and such. My father is restoring a windmill that will aid in the irrigation of the back field. With that in place, I will be able to grow some beautiful heirloom pumpkins. Both my husband and I love things from the past. He enjoys the early automobiles, tractors, tools and I enjoy heirloom plants and vegetables, kitchen gadgets, cooking and preserving. I hope to share our adventure with you. Grab a straw bale in the back of the truck, sit back and enjoy the ride with us.
